What are lab-grown gemstones?
Lab-grown gemstones, as the name suggests, are artificially cultivated gemstones. Typically, these stones are created in controlled environments like laboratories, where conditions mimicking natural crystal growth are replicated. High pressure and temperature are applied, alongside variable controllers, to produce the most flawless synthetic gemstones.
To produce these gems, the "Czochralski method" is employed. This technique, invented by J. Czochralski in 1917, involves pulling a high-quality single crystal from a molten melt. This method enables the growth of important gem crystals such as colorless sapphire, ruby, yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG), gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG), alexandrite, and spinel. In the 1960s, the pulling method evolved into a more advanced crystal shaping technique-the melt-molding method. This controlled-shape pulling technique directly forms crystals with various cross-sectional shapes from the melt. It not only eliminates the heavy mechanical processing required for industrial production of synthetic crystals but also effectively conserves raw materials and reduces production costs.
The advantage of this cultivation method lies in the ability to conduct direct testing and observation during crystal growth. This facilitates precise control over growth conditions, leading to higher-quality products. Furthermore, with established cultivation techniques, production speeds are significantly accelerated-unlike natural processes requiring decades or centuries to yield final products.
Today, lab-grown gemstones presented to the public are not only affordable but also exhibit excellent color and clarity. This has led to the creation of numerous jewelry pieces featuring these lab-grown stones, making once-unattainable natural gemstones accessible to the masses.
