Round Green Corundum

Synthetic corundum is produced in laboratories or industrial settings through artificial intervention to synthesize corundum crystals.

The primary component of corundum crystals is aluminum oxide, identical to natural corundum.

The synthesized corundum is a colorless, transparent crystal, also known as white sapphire or white corundum. To produce corundum in other colors-such as blue, red, or green-trace amounts of metallic elements are introduced during processing as color-inducing agents to alter its original white hue.

The artificial method for manufacturing corundum typically involves the following steps:

1. Mix high-purity aluminum oxide powder with an appropriate amount of colorant.

2. Heat the mixture in a high-temperature furnace (approximately 2050°C).

3. The powder melts in the flame and drips onto a slowly rotating and descending ceramic base below.

4. Layers of molten droplets accumulate, gradually cooling and crystallizing to form a pear-shaped crystal rod (boule).

This process yields cost-effective corundum crystals indistinguishable from natural ones in color.

Additionally, more advanced techniques like the Czochralski Process and Hydrothermal Process exist for producing lab-grown sapphire. These methods yield superior color quality by mimicking natural gemstone growth patterns, though they are relatively more expensive and offer higher quality.

Synthetic corundum finds extensive applications. In the jewelry sector, it commonly serves as an alternative to natural colored gemstones. In industrial fields, it is used to manufacture wear-resistant bearings, watch crystals, optical windows, semiconductor LED substrates, laser generators (such as ruby lasers), and medical instruments.

Commonly used in S925 series jewelry.
